Today  in Tehran, some believe that because their finger is on the trigger and they have taken the world's oil flow in the Strait of Hormuz hostage, the entire world must kneel before them . They speak confidently of a "new Hormuz order" and imagine the era of negotiation is over-that it is now time to collect ransoms and dictate terms to the world's vessels . But history is a ruthless teacher . Let us look back to 1986; back to Al-Faw . In those days, when we captured Al-Faw, that same sense of invincibility blinded us . Right-thinking human beings will be appalled by this awful method of political assassination. There’s one Iranian institution, unfortunately, whose response to the revelation of Navalny’s frog poisoning was less likely to have been disgust and more likely “hold my beer”.   Farewell, Dr. Seyyed Hossein Jabal Amelian, we hardly knew you Precision munition-induced leadership flux: that’s our five-word summary of what’s happening to Iran’s SPND organisation as a consequence of the current conflict. The opening salvo of 28 February which killed Supreme Leader Khamenei also took out senior Iranian officials including both the most recent head of SPND, Reza Mozafarinia , as well as the current head, Dr Seyyed Hossein Jabal Amelian. We’d hardly had the chance to meet Dr Amelian ( سید حسین جیل عاملیان , national ID: 1284561240), and thought that he deserved an obituary of sorts from the Internet’s number one source of SPND-related news, commentary, and sometimes-relevant memes.   Fratricidal Tendencies - The IRGC (Sepah) & Artesh   Each branch of a country’s armed forces holds the other branches in very low regard. Armies think that sailors are sodomites and aviators are restaurant critics. Navies think soldiers and airmen are cavemen and dilettantes respectively. Air forces – when not thinking about which restaurant they’re going to visit next – are too comfortable to pay the others much attention. Inter-service enmity is common worldwide. But in Iran, this enmity takes a particularly vicious form. And there’s a single schism at its heart: the divide between the regular armed forces (Artesh/ ارتش ) and the IRGC (Sepah/ سپاه ). These two entities are essentially competing military services. Each has ground forces; air forces; and naval forces. They have separate command structures.
