  Fratricidal Tendencies - The IRGC (Sepah) & Artesh   Each branch of a country’s armed forces holds the other branches in very low regard. Armies think that sailors are sodomites and aviators are restaurant critics. Navies think soldiers and airmen are cavemen and dilettantes respectively. Air forces – when not thinking about which restaurant they’re going to visit next – are too comfortable to pay the others much attention. Inter-service enmity is common worldwide. But in Iran, this enmity takes a particularly vicious form. And there’s a single schism at its heart: the divide between the regular armed forces (Artesh/ ارتش ) and the IRGC (Sepah/ سپاه ).   One of the things we initially overlooked in the recent media investigation into SPND front company DamavandTec was a single fleeting reference to an IRGC commander named Hossein Ali Agha Dadi. Practically as a throwaway line, the reporters stated that Agha Dadi “has held senior roles in companies responsible for Iran’s ballistic missile and drone programmes, including development of the Shahed model given by Iran to Russia to attack Ukraine.” We must admit we’d not heard of Agha Dadi before, despite being both Extremely Online and obsessed with everything to do with Iran’s military and WMD-related programmes. So, we did our usual online search for Agha Dadi’s name – starting in English – and found virtually nothing.  That’s the kind of challenge that we immediately had to pursue! اون ایرانی‌هایی که بدبختانه تو سازمان سپند کار می‌کنن یا کنارشون زندگی می‌کنن، بعدش چی می‌شه؟ کل مقامات بالای سپند - بیش از یک دوجین نفر - تو حملات خرداد ماه از بین رفتن . چیزی که از زیرساخت هسته‌ای ایران باقی مونده زیر آجره و تهدید می‌شه که اگه ایران دوباره فعالیت‌های هسته‌ای‌اش رو شروع کنه یا به سمت ساخت بمب بره حملات جدیدی صورت بگیره، با اون جمله قلیلی که می‌گه " علف رو ملموم کردن " تا سیاست عدم گسترش تسلیحات هسته‌ای غرب در قبال ایران رو توصیف کنه . اوضاع برای کارمندهای سپند خوب نیست . تنها مزیت واضح برای اونایی که تو خرداد هدف قرار نگرفتن اینه که هنوز زنده‌ان - حداقل فعلا . احتمال حملات بیشتر باعث می‌شه خیلی‌ها دنبال اولین فرصت برای تغییر شغل بگردن - و برای اونایی که نمی‌تونن، هر درخواستی از مدیریت برای کار روی پروژه‌های حساس‌تر مرتبط با سلاح‌های کشتار جمعی، خیلی سخت قبول می‌شه . اتفاقات خرداد ماه به ما نشون داد که دشمنان ایران قطعا این فعالیت‌ها و افرادی که اون‌ها رو انجام می‌دن، رو تحمل نمی‌کنن . با این حال، مطمئن هستیم که حداقل چند تا فرصت‌طلب تو سپ...

After the strikes, there’s something in the water What’s next for those Iranians unfortunate enough to be working for the SPND organisation, or living alongside them? The entire top tier of SPND’s senior officials – more than a dozen people – was wiped out during the attacks in June. What remains of Iran’s nuclear infrastructure is buried under rubble. And the threat looms of new strikes if Iran restarts nuclear activities or moves towards pursuing a bomb, with the piquant phrase “mowing the grass” being used to describe Western non-proliferation policy vis-à-vis Iran. Things are not looking bright if you’re an SPND employee. The only clear upside for those who weren’t targeted during June is that they’re still alive – at least for the moment. It’s summertime! And SPND employees have been enjoying some work from home following the wholesale destruction in June of the organization’s Tehran headquarters, various research laboratories, explosive testing facilities, chemical/biological weapons research base, and entire senior leadership team.
